Spring break is really just a month away. Even if you aren't going somewhere for spring break, you probably have some sort of vacation on your mind this winter.

We are officially at the point in winter where it is cold and dragging on and we are all dreaming of a little escape.

However, if you are about to really get planning or maybe already have official plans, there is something you definitely want to be aware of.

There are currently two different warnings from the U.S. Department of State, urging Wisconsin residents to avoid a few popular tourist destinations at the moment.

Trinidad & Tobago

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago currently has a level three travel warning, which was just reviewed and kept in place. This alert asks Wisconsin residents to reconsider travel here due to crime, including terrorism and kidnapping.

The crimes are very serious, including gang activity, narcotics trafficking, murder, robbery, home invasion and even kidnapping. The U.S. Department of State warns that terrorist attacks targeted at popular tourist destinations may occur.

Shootings also occur regularly in certain parts of Trinidad and Tobago, specifically at the Port of Spain.

Jamaica

This is one of my favorite places I have ever traveled! The U.S. Department of State is urging Wisconsin residents to reconsider travel to the area, mainly due to high crime and concerns over medical services.

The crime rate in Jamaica is the highest in the western hemisphere, where sexual assaults and armed robberies are common. Many reports come from popular tourist resorts. Response to these types of crimes is often slow and there is little follow through.

The last reason for this alert is that medical services are much different than that of the United States, where emergency services and EMTs are not always readily available.

How To Stay Safe

If you are traveling to any of these areas, make sure you do not walk alone or travel at night. Be aware of your circumstances at all times and avoid secluded places.

The Official U.S. Government 'Do Not Travel' List

Traveling to unique and exotic places rather than the usual tourist traps can be quite an adventure. However, it's crucial to research your destination thoroughly.

While every trip comes with some degree of risk, requiring you to mind your surroundings and take some precautions, there are some places you just shouldn't visit, as they are not worth the risk.

The United States government has a convenient website that helps by listing travel advisories they have in place for countries all over the world, ranking the risk from Level 1 through Level 4.

If a country is issued a Level 4 advisory, you should NOT travel there. As of November 2024, the countries below are on the 'Do Not Travel' list.
