Hawkeyes Are Great Late and Headed to the Elite Eight!
In a battle of Big Ten foes, it was who could be great, late. Iowa didn't lead until late in the second half against Nebraska, but would hold on for the win that put Iowa in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987!
Iowa Makes Big Ten History
The #9 seed Hawkeyes topped the #4 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers 77-71 Thursday night and head to the Elite Eight. Hawk Central reports that with the win, Iowa is the lowest seeded Big Ten team to ever reach the Elite Eight. Iowa's unpredictable NCAA Tournament run under first year head coach Ben McCollum continues!
Stars Score Big for Both Teams
Both teams top players came to play on Thursday night. Pryce Sandfort, who last season wore an Iowa uniform, scored 25 points for Nebraska, according to ESPN. But his shooting slumped in the second half, as did the entire Cornhusker team. The Hawkeyes were led by senior Bennett Stirtz, who scored 20 points in the win for Iowa.
Another Big Game for Alvaro Folgueiras
After his game winning shot against #1 seed Florida, Alvaro Folgueiras had another stellar game against Nebraska. ESPN reports that Folgueiras scored 16 points, including a key three-point play late in the game, when the Cornhuskers only had four defenders on the flour. He had another dunk with 34 seconds left that put the exclamation point on the Iowa win!
Iowa One Win Away from The Final Four
The Hawkeyes are amazingly one win away from the Final Four. Standing in their way is yet another Big Ten team, the Illinois Fighting Illini. ESPN reports that Illinois won the regular season's only matuchup 75-69.
