The Iowa men's basketball team has lost one of its best players to injury for the rest of the season.

There will be a huge hole to fill in the middle of the Iowa men's basketball lineup for the rest of the season as the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that center Owen Freeman will miss the rest of the season with a finger injury. The sophomore will undergo surgery on the injured finger today, ending his 2025 season.

Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery stated that after discussing the injury with his family and the Iowa medical staff, it was determined that surgery was the best option for treatment according to the Gazette. McCaffery added that Freeman is expected to make a full recovery and has the continued support of the Iowa basketball family.

As a freshman, Freeman was named the co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year. In his 19 games played this season, he averaged a team-high 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the Hawkeyes. The Gazette reports that Freeman has scored at least 11 points in every game this season and had over 20 points on four occasions. He currently sits third in the Big Ten in blocked shots and field goal percentage.

The Gazette reports that Riley Mulvey, a 6-11 sophomore, and Ladji Dembele, a 6-8 sophomore, are the only remaining big men on the Iowa roster. The Hawkeyes sit at 13-8 overall, and 4-6 in Big Ten play. The team's first matchup without Freeman in the lineup won't be an easy one. Iowa hosts #10 Purdue on Tuesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 6 p.m.
