Iowa Schools Close as Blizzard Conditions Hit the State

Schools all across the state of Iowa canceled in person classes for Wednesday, March 5th due to the severe weather conditions.

High Winds and Snow Create Dangerous Travel Conditions

Snow and wind gusts of 50 MPH swept throughout the entire state, causing blizzard like conditions. While most parts of our region are not seeing a major amount of snow, it's the wind that is throwing a wrench into travel conditions.

According to our weather partners at KCRG-TV, snow came to a gradual stop on Wednesday afternoon.

Wind Warnings Issued Across Eastern Iowa

However, the dangerous wind gusts roared on.

All of Eastern Iowa had been placed under a Wind Advisory or High Wind Warning, according to a report from KCRG-TV.

Iowa State Patrol Responds to Hundreds of Calls

This weather event has been causing hazardous road conditions all across the state all day.

Iowa State Patrol officials issued a warning for travelers, to steer clear of the roads on Wednesday if possible. On the organization's social media page, state law enforcement shared photos of patrol vehicles being struck while on duty.

In just twenty-four hours, there were 575 calls for service, according to Iowa State Patrol officials. This includes 445 motorist assists, 130 crashes, and eighteen personal injuries.

Multi-Car Pileup On I-35 Near Huxley

Even just a small amount of snow mixed with wind can cause major issues for drivers out on the road.

Officials shared a video of a devastating site on the Iowa State Patrol Facebook page on Wednesday morning. Multiple vehicles were stranded on the roadway in the middle of the storm.

You can see in the video that a semi-truck and a car appeared to have significant damage after traversing this blizzard conditions. The post claims that this multi-car incident took place on I-35 near Huxley.

There is no word on whether or not anyone was injured from the crash.

Later on, law enforcement officials closed BOTH lanes of I-35 (North of Ankeny) due to a multi-vehicle crash.
